Match Report

On days like today you remember why you love being involved in football at whatever level it is. These teams served up a great cup match that went all the way to penalties and made the spectators forget about the miserable weather that greeted them in Kells this morning. Trim played with 10 men throughout but you wouldn't know it from the way the team played. Right from the start Trim settled into their football and created chances through Dylan Smith, Tyreece Tango and Aidan Scott. Trims defence was solid and giving little room to the opposition to play. On 22 minutes a long ball from Kells was picked up by Oisin Gallagher who played the ball back towards Donal McGale in the Trim goal. The ball caught a bobble as Donal was clearing it causing a miskick which ended up at the feet of a Kells forward who just had to sidefoot the ball into the net. Trim settled back into their football and while they played neat football couldn't find the equaliser.
After half time Trim played up the hill making their task that bit harder. The hill became steeper when Kells left winger scored a beautiful goal after 20 minutes to give them a 2 goal lead. Things looked bleak for Trim at this stage though the scoreline didn`t reflect the balance of the game. Trim knuckled down again and continued to create chances. Finally, with 10 minutes left, Oisin Gallagher took off on a mazy run from his own half and crossed the ball into the penalty area from near the end line. The Kells keeper cleared the ball only to the edge of his area. Dylan Smith controlled it and coolly chipped it back over the keeper for Trim`s opener. Trim sensed that the game was still there for them and attacked relentlessly as full time approached and Donal McGale made some great runs down the left hand side. With time ebbing away the ball was worked down the left. Dylan Smith crossed it into the penalty area where Sam Lynch controlled it and stabbed it past the keeper for the equaliser. Within a minute the referee had blown for full time.
Trim`s 10 men had given their all and now faced 20 minutes of extra time. Kells, to their credit, picked up the pace in extra time and scored after 3 minutes. Trim responded within minutes when Dylan Smith crossed for Tyreece Tango to finish neatly and tie up the match again. Despite the best efforts of both teams the game couldn't be decided in play and went to penalties. Oisin Gallagher, Donal McGale and Dylan Smith dispatched their penalties. But the hero of the hour was Finn O Connor, who kept goal in the second half and saved 3 penalties to secure the win. Credit is due to both teams for a great contest. Besides playing some very good football at times Trim showed tremendous guts to battle out this win with 10 men having gone behind by two goals. It`s impossible to pick out a man of the match as every one of the Trim players performed very well. But special mention must be made of Finn O'Connor , who was very good at centre back in the first half, pulled off some good saves in goals in the second half and stopped three penalties to ensure Trim won through to the next round.
Trim Celtic squad: Donal McGale, Finn O'Connor, Sam Lynch, Oisin Gallagher, Arnas Mineikis, Kacper Jagodzinski, Tyreece Tango, Dylan Smith, Sean McPhillips, Aidan Scott
