Johnstown vs Second Team

Match Report

This was a hard fought battle on a very hot day in the MDL Grounds. Johnstown started much better of the two teams getting in from the left hand side and forcing an early save from Trim keeper Robbie Westphal. A few minutes later they got in again with Johnstowns big striker getting the better of Celtic’s defence but Westphal again kept Johnstown out with a magnificent double save. Having survived that period of pressure Trim took a grip on the game, creating plenty of chances. Anthony Craig started to take control of the midfield and eventually putting Paul Bartley in who was taken down by the keeper. The referee had no option but to send the keeper off before Bartley then confidently dispatching the penalty. Celtic doubled their lead before halftime with a good finish from in form Dominic Fagan.
Trim started 2nd half stronger capitalising on their numerical advantage and it wasn’t long before they got the 3rd with a brilliant volley from Anthony Craig into the bottom corner giving the Johnstown keeper no chance. Johnstown then came back into it as Trim got a little complacent with silly mistakes in defence gifting Johnstown 2 goals. Johnstown, to their credit, battled well and Westphal kept them out again preventing the equaliser but Celtic finished the game off with a brilliant counter attack ending in a goal finished off by Gary Connell calmly curling the ball around the keeper to make it 4-2. Trim made hard work of it in the end but safely go through to the next round.
