Match Report

Trim Celtic survived a scare but ultimately progressed to the second round of the NEFL Challenge Cup at the expense of their hosts Johnstown at the MDL Grounds. in a high tempo game the hosts had the first chance of the game but shot narrowly wide from the angle but it was Trim Celtic who took the lead when Brian Faulkner side footed into the far corner of the net on 8 minutes. The Division 1 side were dangerous on the break and equalised with a well worked goal in the 11th minute. Celtic responded with a shot from former Johnstown player Lee Duffy which went narrowly wide. Derek Donohoe's link up play was superb for Celtic and a superb one-two between him and Duffy saw Duffy's lob drift away from goal. James Goggins then got on the edge of another defence splitting pass from Donohoe but he couldn't convert either. Celtic were made to pay for these missed chances as two goals in three minutes saw Johnstown race into a 3-1 lead. Again it was Duffy who tried to respond for the Trim side but he was denied by a superb save. The next goal was going to be critical and with five minutes to go until halftime it was Celtic who scored it as Donohoe again played in Goggins and this time he made no mistake to slot home.
Early in the second half Johnstown should have made it 4 but shot into the side netting before Donohoe headed wide from a corner. Despite trailing the hoops never panicked and equalised on the hour when Faulkner nipped in to convert Dean Courtney's in-swinging free kick. Three minutes later the comeback was complete as Lar Ivers who had replaced Donohoe five minutes previously lashed home Lee Duffy's low centre. With 15 minutes remaining Dean Courtney raced through to superbly finish his 5th goal of the season. Johnstown forced a superb save from Darren McGarry with ten minutes remaining but Celctic saw out the remaining time well.
