Match Report

On a bitterly cold evening Trim Celtic produced a red hot team performance to dump league leaders Muirhevna Mór out of the Challenge Cup. Playing some superb intricate football on the night Celtic's hunger and energy and workrate all over the field payed dividends. Paul Campbell's double edged him closer to 160 first team goals while at the other end of the spectrum Ruairi Shortt bagged his first. Despite their goals it was keeper Iain Telford who picked up the Man of the Match award with a sting of superb saves and pressure relieving punches and catches. Unfortunately on a night if such positives Celtic lost top scorer Brian Faulkner to injury just after halftime. Celtic started brightly and had two chances in the first five minutes with Faulkner denied by the keeper's legs and O'Connor glancing a header wide. The deadlock was broken by Campbell in typical fashion as he lashed the ball home from 20 yards. On 32 minutes the lead was doubled as youngster Shortt curled home superbly from the edge of the box. Five minutes into the second half, following the loss of Faulkner, the visitors forced a surge of pressure forcing several corners. One such corner fell to the edge of the box and was volleyed superbly towards the corner of the net, Telford made a superb save to his left to keep the ball out. Campbell tried his luck from 35 yards but his effort drifted narrowly over. At the other end Muirhevna Mór broke and had a penalty shout waved away. Telford made another fine stop at the near post as the Dundalk side twisted the screw. Campbell and the superb James Goggins combined to put the former through but the keeper got his angles right to push the ball around the post. Campbell wasn't to be denied as he headed home the resulting corner on the hour mark. With 20 minutes to go Muirhevna Mór deservedly pulled a goal back but despite their best efforts couldn't find a way past Telford who produced another superb point blank save.
Celtic will face Bellurgan Utd in the Semi-Final, a side they gave this Sunday in their last league match of the season. y
