The 2017/18 season is underway and the return to Tully Park was marked with a victory on a fine evening. New signings goalkeeper Darren McGarry, full back Ciaran O'Connell and midfielder Dean Courtney started to make their senior debuts for the club while Craig Dempsey entered the fray as a second half substitute. There wasn't much in the way of goalmouth action with the returning Gary Connell leaping well at the back post but heading over on 40 minutes against his former team. With the game creeping towards halftime Athboy won the ball deep in the Trim half but Darren McGarry was equal to the striker's effort palming the ball away well. Early in the second half an Athboy freekick had McGarry scampering across his line but the ball drifted wide. At the other end Faulkner tested the legs of the visiting with a fierce shot at the end of a may run. Celtic introduced striker Derek Donohoe from the bench and he almost made an immediate impact but his header at the back post was somehow cleared off the line. Five minutes later he wasn't to be denied. A corner fell to Donohoe on the edge of the box and he superbly sprayed the ball back out to Courtney who's deep cross found Donohoe at the back post to control and lash home. Minutes later the two combined again with the impressive Courtney unleashing a fierce low drive that the keeper couldn't hold on to, he did however recover before Keith Jones could get in the end of the spilled shot. Next up is Virginia away on Sunday at 11:30am.
