Match Report

There was yet another penalty shootout heartache for Trim Celtic U16 Premier side as the lost on penalties following a 2-2 draw away to the Drogheda Double winners Bellurgan FC in the North Leinster Semi Final last Sunday. Bellurgan started brighter and following a defensive mixup they took the lead after 15 minutes. Celtic responded well and only took 5 minutes to draw level. After some good work from James Molloy and Alan Costello they found the excellent Jared Akigbesote who finished at the second attempt. Both teams played with great determination and commitment in what was a proper old fashioned cup tie. Bellurgan took the lead again on the half hour mark as the Celtic defense were closed down brilliantly and their centre forward had an easy tap in following a great cross from their left winger. However, Jared Akigbesote bagged his second of the game as his pressure on the Bellurgan back four gave him the opportunity to level the game at 2-2. The second half was a war of attrition. With only one substitution, Celtic had to dig deeper as Cole, Gibbons, Mc Cormack, Cottrell, Gorman, and Tully were all carrying injuries. However, all players showed fantastic spirit and determination lead by the exceptional Harry Cottrell and Wes Gibbons. The game finished 2-2 as nothing could split the teams. Both sides had chances to win it in Extra Time as Celtic keeper Glenn Prendergast made a fantastic save to divert a shot onto the crossbar and Aaron Mc Cormack had his shot brilliantly saved in the final minutes to take the match to penalties. Unfortunately, Celtic suffered the same result as the shield final when they lost out to Kells on penalties. Man of the Match: Harry Cottrell Next up for Celtic is a home game next Saturday 9th Feb v Bohemians FC in the rescheduled fixture of the SFAI Round 32.
