Match Report

t was an early start for Trim Celtic who travelled to Athboy for a 9:45 kick off and they showed no signs of tiredness as they set about their job with great energy and pace to hit the ground running from the first whistle. After an even opening ten minutes Celtic hit the front when Mark Dempsey broke clear and used his pace to leave the defender in his wake before clipping the ball home past the advancing 'keeper. Ten minutes later Sean Foley had a great chance to double the lead but the ball just wouldn't come down and his right foot volley flew just over the bar. The Celtic defence were restricting the home side to long speculative shots many of which were off target.
Athboy came much more into it in the second half and Celtic had their 'keeper Kevin Dalton, back to his best, to thank for keeping their lead intact. First he made an excellent stop with his feet from a goal bound shot before later on pushing a free kick up onto the crossbar after diving down low to his right. Athboy then hit the woodwork for the second time after Dalton came out to narrow the angle with the Athboy forward crashing his shot off the outside of the post. Despite this Celtic had plenty of possession in the Athboy third and had plenty of half chances to finish off the game. While Athboy may feel a bit unlucky not to score, anyone who witnessed Celtic's last two games would not begrudge them a little bit of luck when it mattered. Best on the day for Celtic were Mark Dempsey,Eoin Gaffney and man of the match Kevin Dalton who ,with the help of his defenders, kept a second consecutive clean sheet.
