A superb performance from Trim Celtic saw them send champions Woodview Celtic home pointless from the opening game of the league season. Woodview started brightly and controlled possession for the first ten minutes and while they had the home side pinned into their own half they struggled to create any chances to test Trim keeper Barry O’Callaghan. A mistake in the Woodview defence saw the ball land at the feet of Trim captain Derek Donohoe but he uncharacteristically shot wide. The game lit up when Mark Leavy opened the scoring with a superb solo goal, rounding the keeper to slot home in the 32nd minute. The scores were level five minutes later when Woodview were awarded a penalty for a push in the box which Mickey O’Kane converted. Leavy, cutting in from the left, shot narrowly wide at the near post early in the second half but got it right next time around in the 62nd minute this time curling superbly into the far corner to restore the Trim side’s lead. The most decisive moment of the game came in the 79th minute when the visitors capitalised on a rare defensive error but O’Callaghan saved superbly with Alan Gilbane tidying up. Gilbane’s clearance found substitute Aaron Ryan who beat the keeper to the ball to slot home to make it 3-1. Two minutes later Ryan made it 4-1 beating one defender before superbly lobbing the keeper from inside the box.
