Trim Celtic had to come from behind twice to inflict a first league defeat on last year’s runners up Navan Cosmos. Cosmos took the lead through Sean Conaty on 7 minutes but Celtic captain Derek Donohoe replied almost immediately. Darragh Scannell and Donohoe both forced fine saves out of Cosmos keeper Alan Rogers. The Navan side retook the lead when Colm Gilsenan netted on 23 minutes. Celtic started the second half well and scored an equaliser on 58 minutes when winger Mark Leavy stuck a shot from the edge of the box that sneaked in despite the best efforts of the Cosmos keeper. The home side took the lead on 70 minutes and it was Leavy again who stuck a shot from the outside of the box that squirmed under the keeper. 3 minutes later Celtic had a two goal cushion when Paul Munnelly’s whipped cross was diverted home by Donohoe. Cosmos’ hopes of a comeback were dashed when their centre-back was given a straight red card for an off the ball incident. Ten minutes later the captain had his hat-trick when Anthony Craig put in a crunching tackle in midfield which broke to Donohoe who sprinted past one defender, nutmegged another before rounding the keeper to slot home. Cosmos pulled a goal back on 88 minutes when substitute Sean Reilly volleyed home a free-kick but it was too late and the 3 points were Celtic’s.
