Match Report

Trim Celtic advanced to the 4th Round of the SFAI cup with a fine win over Duleek United at Tully Park. Celtic entered this match with a full complement of players against the relatively unknown Duleek side. As always in these types of matches both teams were sounding each other out in the early stages. Celtic had the advantage of a slight breeze in the 1st half and took advantage of some good pressing when Sean Mc Donnell robbed the defender in possession and ran through to accurately place the ball in the corner to give Celtic the lead in the 10th minute. Indeed this was an excellent feature of Celtic's play early on, with Celtic giving Duleek very little time on the ball and pressing them high up the pitch. One could have become two in the 18th minute when a brilliant cross by Ciaran Caulfield found ace centre forward Conor O’Hare in the box but this time his effort was just over the bar. Shortly after this the same combination doubled Celtic’s lead when Conor was on the receiving end of a pass from Ciaran to put Celtic 2 up. Duleek came into the game a little more after this without ever really threatening David Curran’s goal for the remainder of the 1st half.
Celtic knew that a 3rd goal would kill off any semblance of a comeback by Duleek and we only had to wait 6 minutes into the 2nd half when a cross from Ciaran along the 6 yard box found Sean Mc Donnell at the back post and the outcome was never in doubt, 3-0 to Celtic. The 4th goal arrived in the 50th minute and this time it was Ciaran applying the finishing touches when he ran on to a long through pass from Kris Gorman. Ciaran was proving very influential in this match and he turned provider again 3 minutes later when he squared the ball for James Molloy to get Celtics 5th goal. The 6th came in the 65 minute when yet another cross by Ciaran was flicked up in the air by James Molloy and the inrushing Aaron Mc Cormack out jumped the keeper to head the ball home. As was perhaps fitting Ciaran finished off the scoring with Celtics 7th in the 69th minute when put through by Conor O’Hare.
Best on the day for Celtic were midfielders Joey Cole and Kris Gorman and up front both wingers Ciaran Caulfield and Sean Mc Donnell were excellent.
Celtic will be away in the 4th round of this competition to either Drogheda Town or Clonee United. The winners of this 4th round tie will then qualify for both the Last 32 in Ireland and the North Leinster regional semi-finals. Next weekend we are away to Parkvilla Blue in the Shield quarter final at 10am.
