Match Report

The first Summer soccer season for the Trim Celtic 14 Premier team drew to a close in disappointing fashion on Saturday when losing the Shield final to Parkvilla Claret. Indeed this match was a reflection of the previous weekend’s SFAI Cup defeat in that Celtic went 1 up but eventually lost to a combination of an own goal and a penalty. The 1st half was scoreless despite Celtic having several decent chances to grab the lead goal. In the 5th minute a long through ball by Sean Tully found Conor O’Hare but his a shot was well saved by the Parkvilla keeper. Sean Mc Donnell then tested the keeper when on the receiving end of a lovely scooped pass by Kris Gorman, but again the keeper managed to push Sean’s shot around the post for a corner in the 30th minute.
Celtic started the 2nd half well and within 3 minutes Ciaran Caulfield went on a run but his resultant shot was just wide. Just a minute later Celtic were 1 up when Sean Mc Donnell went on a brilliant run down the wing and crossed into the box for Kris Gorman to thump home the lead goal for Celtic. Parkvilla to their credit kept plugging away and were rewarded in the 54th minute when an attempted cross from the bye line cruelly deflected of a Celtic defender and nestled in the back of the net to restore parity in the game. Celtic responded to this setback and Conor O’Hare was unlucky 2 minutes later when his effort just flew over the bar. Disaster was to strike a 2nd time for Celtic in the 62nd minute when a Parkvilla forward was adjudged to have been brought down in the box by the referee and Parkvilla scored the penalty to take an the lead. Despite Celtic’s best efforts to grab an equalising goal in the last 8 minutes it was not to be. Both Kris Gorman and Ciaran Caulfield were denied by fine saves by the Parkvilla keeper in the last few minutes.
While Celtic will be disappointed to lose this final, they can take great pride and credit from their unbeaten title winning season and resolve to put this defeat quickly behind them. Next Sunday the club holds their End of Season Presentation Day in the Castle Arch Hotel at 4:30 pm, when the squad will reap the rewards of their successful season.
