Match Report

On another wet Monday evening Johnstown were the visitors to Tully Park. Celtic certainly relished being back in the wide open spaces of Tully Park, indeed they were straight out of the blocks with 2 goals in the first 2 minutes, the 1st coming from a right wing cross from Sean Mc Donnell that was strongly finished to the net by centre forward Conor O’Hare and the same player headed home a minute later, this time from a cross from Ciaran Caulfield on the left. However the early jubilation was somewhat tempered when Johnstown pulled a goal back after 5 minutes from a long through ball finished by their centre forward. Celtic regained their 2 goal advantage in the 10th minute when Ciaran was this time set up by Conor to make it 3-1. Conor duly completed his hat trick when he scored with a deflected free kick 2 minutes later. Celtic scored again in the 15th minute when Joey Cole’s superb corner kick was headed in by Kris Gorman for Celtic’s 5th goal. Celtic were playing with certain panache now and the next goal arrived in the 22nd minute when Wes Gibbons’ free kick was flicked on by Kris into Ciaran’s path to make it 6-1. On 25 minutes it was 7 when Conor’s pass again found Ciaran on the run to complete his hat trick. The 8th Celtic goal of the half was a repeat of the 5th with Joey’s corner being headed home by Kris. Johnstown gave another reminder that they were still in the game when they scored their 2nd just before half time. Conor got his 4th and Celtic’s 9th in the 42nd minute when put through by Sean Tully. Ciaran then equalled Conor’s tally when played in by James Molloy to put Celtic 10-2 up with 20 minutes still to play. A minute later Ciaran had another when a delightful defence splitting pass from Conor Gray put him through with just the keeper to beat, which he did superbly. The 12th Celtic goal arrived in the 63rd minute when Sean Mc Donnell opened his account with a fierce shot when the ball had rebounded to him in the box. Johnstown did get another goal back 2 minutes later but the scoring was completed in the 70th minute with a superb long range effort by Conor Gray flew into the top corner of the Johnstown net leaving the final score 13-3 to Celtic. While the strikers will take a lot of the plaudits from this match, there were also some notable performances from the likes of Joey Cole, who was a rock in the midfield and from Blake Gibbons who tackled and played like a demon at the back. This was an awesome display of finishing from Celtic but there will be some concern at the goals conceded despite a fine overall team performance.
