Match Report

On a sunny but extremely cold morning in the MDL the top two teams in the Premier Division met for the 2nd time this season. In a compelling match Trim Celtic came out on top against Parkvilla Claret by a 2 goal margin to repeat their victory of the opening day against the same opposition. This was a must win game for Parkvilla and they came out of the blocks very quickly even though the 1st chance fell to Celtic when James Molloy had a fine shot just wide in the 3rd minute. However Parkvilla were to take the lead in the 7th minute when their centre forward broke though centre of the Celtic defence and finished well giving David Curran no chance in the Celtic goal. This was to be the one and only time he did this as central defenders Wes Gibbons and Harry Cottrell shored up the defence following this to prevent any similar incursions. Celtic didn’t panic despite this setback and settled well into the match for the next 10 minutes. They were rewarded for their impressive play when ace centre forward Josh Harris ran through and finished well off the far post to level the scores in the 18th minute. This was to be the start of a purple patch for Celtic and just a minute later a looping shot from 25 yards out by David Boyle dropped into the top left hand corner to give Celtic the lead. Things could have got even better for Celtic when with their next attack a minute later Sean Mc Donnell was unlucky to see his shot come back of the Parkvilla post. Parkvilla responded to these setbacks and had their best spell leading up to half time. During this period Celtic lost their captain Ciaran Caulfield to injury just 3 minutes before the break being replaced by Aaron Mc Cormack.
Celtic needed to up the intensity of their play in the 2nd half following their lull before half time and could have increased their lead further in the 1st minute of the 2nd half when a fine shot by David Boyle struck the woodwork and rebounded to safety. Parkvilla came close to equalising in the 42nd minute from a corner but their scrambled effort was well cleared of the line by the impressive Sean Tully. Celtic suffered another injury blow in the 43rd minute when the influential Sean Mc Donnell had to go off with a bad ankle injury. He was replaced by the fit again Ciaran Caulfield. The next significant chance fell to Josh Harris in the 57th minute who after a tremendous run just failed to convert with his shot just shaving the far post. Celtic were not to be denied their 3rd goal and it arrived just 2 minutes later when Ciaran picked up the ball and went on an unstoppable run before finishing the ball to the Parkvilla net. Celtic brought Blake Gibbons and Aidan Scott off the bench now and both settled seamlessly into the match and showed some nice touches. Parkvilla pushed on again to try to get themselves back into the game but Celtic had several decent chances through substitutes Aaron Mc Cormack and Conor O’Hare. Despite having Ciaran Caulfield sent off for a 2nd yellow card in the closing stages Celtic held out for a well merited win. This was another all-round performance by the team and despite conceding the early goal they showed their character to come back to earn a fully deserved victory. The keeper and defence were resolute and determined throughout, the midfield was superbly marshalled by Joey Cole, ably assisted by Kris Gorman, and up front the strikers had their shooting boots back on again this week.
