Match Report

The sun was shining in the MDL and it definitely felt like Summer soccer had well and truly arrived. Trim Celtic enjoyed the conditions and it was good to get back to play our 1st home game of the season in the wide expanses of the main pitch in the MDL. Celtic shot straight out of the blocks and were a goal to the good in the very 1st minute when Ciaran Caulfield went on one of his typical runs down the left wing and crossed to the far post where the incoming Kris Gorman drove the ball to the back of the net despite the best efforts of the Kells keeper. This was the start that Celtic needed against a sometimes resolute Kells side. Celtic kept pressing and the 2nd goal duly arrived in the 11th minute when Ben Kavanagh played James Molloy through and he finished confidently past the advancing Kells keeper. Celtic enjoyed the lion’s share of possession for the remainder of the 1st half and were very quick to retrieve the ball with some excellent pressing when Kells were in possession. During this period Ciaran was unlucky with a shot in the 28th minute that was saved by the keeper.
Shortly after half time Blake Gibbons and Conor O’Hare were introduced and helped to make an immediate impact. Ben Kavanagh received the ball about 40 yards out near and touch line in the 47th minute and seeing the Kells keeper well off his line, which he was prone to do throughout the game, elegantly lobbed him to the far corner. This was especially sweet for Ben as this was his 1st match against his former club and team mates. This was effectively match over as Celtic were well in control and dominating the play despite the soaring temperatures that were taking its toll as a result of the huge work load that the lads had put in, in particular the likes of Joey Cole and Kris Gorman in the middle of the park. Celtic could have had a 4th in the 52nd minute when Conor O’Hare pushed the ball passed the advancing keeper but the shot was off target. Celtic had an even better chance 3 minutes later when David Boyle broke through on the left hand side but his shot was saved by the keeper, the rebound fell to Conor O’Hare but the keeper to his credit somehow managed to keep Conor’s shot out. The last 10 minutes were played out at a more pedestrian pace. This was another excellent performance which maintains Celtic winning start to the season. There is a break now for Easter but the lads will be desperate to get back playing and trying to maintain their current good form. Best on the day were Wes Gibbons in defence, the aforementioned Joey and Kris in midfield and Ciaran and James Molloy in attack.
