Match Report

Two goals from full back Dean Rowlands, an Evan Tobin thunderbolt and a fourth from Harry Cottrell handed Athboy their first defeat of the season in a game which Celtic almost threw away in the last five minutes. Twenty minutes in Trim were awarded a free kick out on the right hand side. Dean Rowlands swung an inviting ball in with his left foot which clipped a defender on the way in at the far post. Fifteen minutes later came the move of the match as Liam Reilly, Luke Doyle and Mark Cunningham linked up brilliantly to tee up Evan Tobin 25 yards out and his first time shot rocketed into the top corner giving the keeper no chance.
The second half started with Athboy getting a foothold in the game with a long range goal of their own to make it 2-1. After an hour it was a sense of deja vu for Athboy as another Dean Rowlands free kick evaded everyone to end up in the back of the net to restore Celtic’s two goal cushion. Fifteen minutes later came the clinching goal as Conor McGinley forced a good save from the Athboy keeper only for Harry Cottrell to tap home the rebound for 4-1. Celtic were rampant now and should have added to their tally but with five minutes to go a misunderstanding in the Celtic defence saw Athboy close to within two. With the game deep into injury time Celtic keeper Kevin Dalton spilled a cross and Athboy finished for 4-3. Thankfully for Celtic the final whistle blew just as the game restarted to give the hoops a well deserved three points in their best display of the season so far.
