A great win for Trim Celtic U16 Greens as they beat an unbeaten Torro Utd side at home to go top of the league.
Torro were unlucky not to take the lead with a fine effort that clipped the crossbar and wide in the opening minutes.
The Torro Utd goalkeeper showed great athleticism to pull off a world class save to deny Jared Akigbesote what looked like a certain goal in the 13th minute. A few minutes later, Kris Gorman rattled the crossbar from a free kick and Jared Akigbesote’s follow up effort hit the post.
Akigbesote continued to be a thorn in the side of the Torro defense and in the 17th minute was brought down in penalty box. The Torro keeper guessed correctly and saved David Boyle penalty kick.
Celtic started the second half on the front foot. Within minutes, the excellent Henrique Magno picked up the ball after a great cross from Jared Akigbesote and hit a crisp strike straight into the back of the net to give the champions a 1-0 lead.
The alertness of Wes Gibbons proved too much for Torro Utd in the 52nd minute as he rose above the defenders to head David Boyle’s corner past the keeper.
Celtic were now attacking at every opportunity. Excellent work from Kris Gorman and Jamie Callan in midfield setup Jared Akigbesote for another scoring opportunity. The keeper saved his shot but the clearance only found David Boyle on the left wing. Boyle powered past his man and drove a low shot into the far corner for his 3rd goal of the season.
A fantastic save from Glenn Prendergast ensured the home side kept a clean sheet and remained the meanest defense in the league.
Celtic had a total of 21 shots on goal with further efforts from Conor Fay, Kris Gorman, Jared Akigbesote, Henrique Magno, and in the final minutes the Torro Utd goalkeeper showed great athleticism to pull off a world class save to deny Aaron Mc Cormack’s fantastic strike from 20 yards in the 76th minute.
