Match Report

Newtown's pitch on the Ardee Road was the venue for this U14 Division 1 encounter on Saturday morning. It turned out to be a closely fought game with Newtown gaining the upper hand late in the game. Trim began with a good wind behind them in the first half and were the better team for the first 20 minutes but despite their dominance couldn't find the opening goal. They paid the price for this when Newtown took the lead from a quick breakaway after 22 minutes. Celtic continued to edge the possession and earned a free kick 25 yards out on the right hand side of the penalty area. Kacper Jagodzinski lofted his shot expertly over the wall and into the top left corner of the goal past the despairing dive of Newtown's keeper. The equaliser from Sam Lynch was well deserved but it took the home side only 5 minutes to regain the lead. Newtown's forward line were proving a handful for the Trim defence and within sight of half time they were awarded what appeared to be a penalty, which much to Trim's relief it was blazed over the bar so Trim went in to half time 2 - 1 down. So Celtic trailed 2-1 st the bread but were still very much in the game.
Against the wind in the second half Trim spent much of their time defending in their own half and opportunities to level the game were infrequent. However 10 minutes in Trim forced a corner which Evan Smyth floated in beautifully and was nodded into the goal despite the best efforts of Newtown's full back on the line. Within minutes Newtown were back in front when a long range shot found it's way into the top right corner. Straight from the kick off an under hit back pass allowed Newtown's centre forward to pounce and he finished deftly past Shaun Mulryan in the Trim goal. So again a disappointing result but a reasonable performance. Newtown were deserving winners mainly because of their excellent forwards who took pretty much sll the chances that came their way. Once again Shaun Mulryan excelled between the posts for Trim Celtic.
