Match Report

For the second match in a row Trim Celtic ended the 100% record of their opponents. Last weekend it was newly promoted Quay Celtic while this week it was Champions Navan Cosmos' record that fell. In a match that had literally everything from 4 Cosmos players facing their former club, 5 goals, two red cards and a missed penalty Celtic held on for the win in a nail biting finish. The first chance of the match fell to Derek Donohoe who flashed a shot across the box and wide. Celtic were given an ideal chance to take the lead on 20 minutes when a penalty was awarded for handball. Brian Faulkner stepped up but Cosmos keeper Gilsenan dived the right way and pushed the spot kick away. The disappointment of this missed opportunity didn't get a chance to settle as Zak McGowan flicked Eoin O'Connor's shot to the net for the opening goal. Cosmos responded immediately and a slick one two in the end of the box saw Lar Ivers through on goal, round keeper Iain Telford but the former Trim Celtic striker was foiled by a superb goal line clearance from Ruairi Shortt. Celtic doubled their lead in the 37th minute. A long free kick into the box was missed by everyone falling nicely to Zak McGowan who squared for Eoin O'Connor to tap home. The Cosmos netminder then pulled off a magnificent save from a Donohoe volley from the edge of the box. Cosmos pushed for a way back into the match and were unlucky not to find one but were once again foiled by Shortt on the goal line.
Cosmos started the second half with intent and got a goal back 5 minutes in when Colm Carney headed home from close range. The next goal would be crucial, and it was the Trim side who responded quickly when out of nothing Donohoe collected a long through on the box, swivelled and placed his shot perfectly into the far corner of the net for his 6th goal of the season. With fifteen minutes to go Celtic were dealt a body blow when defender Cyril Halton picked up a second yellow however Cosmos numerical advantage was quickly cancelled out when Conor Walsh also received a second caution minutes later. Cosmos push for a second and Celtic had to deal with a succession of corners and crosses before another former Celtic player Robbie Dillon ghosted in to head home. Cosmos pushed for an equaliser but Trim Celtic held on for an excellent win.
