Match Report

The opening round of matches in the new shortened season, due to the decision to move to calendar football, pitted the top 2 teams in the league from last season against each other at Watters Lane in Navan. Parkvilla won the league but Trim Celtic had pushed them all the way despite an indifferent start to the League last year. Bearing this in mind this was a crucial match for both teams even at this early stage of the season. Celtic got a dream start when after 3 minutes a shot by last season’s top scorer Josh Harris was saved by the keeper but the rebound fell to Ciaran Caulfield who slotted the ball home to put Celtic 1-0 up. Both teams settled into the game after this and enjoyed some good possession without really threatening to score. However Parkvilla drew level in the 17th minute when they managed to poke the ball home following a goalmouth scramble from a corner. This gave Parkvilla a bit of a boost and they started to dominate play in the middle of the park at this stage but to Celtic’s credit they kept battling away and they were rewarded in the 33rd minute when a Ciaran Caulfield corner was headed on by Kris Gorman, only for his effort to be cleared off the line, the clearance fell to David Boyle whose 1st shot hit the post but he made no mistake with the rebound.
Celtic went in a goal up at half time but realised that they needed to step up their performance especially in the middle of the park in order to maintain control of the match. Celtic looked dangerous on the break in the 2nd half and were now stretching the Parkvilla defence. In the 50th minute Josh Harris ran on to a through ball from David Boyle and was subsequently brought down by the keeper resulting in a penalty for Celtic. David Boyle stepped up to place the ball to the keeper's left to double Celtic’s lead. Celtic were now comfortable in the match and indeed increased their lead to 4-1 in the 62nd minute, after a great run and pass by Ciaran Caulfield, found substitute Conor O’Hare in front of the goals and he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper inside the far post . The same player had a similar chance a few minutes later but this time his effort was foiled by the keeper. Parkvilla kept going until the end and did pull a goal back with 3 minutes of normal time to play but Celtic held on despite 4 minutes of injury time to record an excellent result. This was a good all round team performance on the day, but special mention must go to debutant keeper, David Curran who was sound throughout the match and looks to have the potential to become an excellent keeper. Joey Cole and Kris Gorman gave their normal proficient performances in midfield and whilst the lads in the forward line have had better days the still posed a threat throughout the match.
Trim Celtic: David Curran, Josh Harris, Harry Cottrell, Blake Gibbons, Ciaran Caulfield, Joey Cole, Kris Gorman, Aaron McCormack, David Boyle, Sean Tully Wesley Gibbons
Subs: Conor O'Hare (for Boyle), James Molloy (for McCormack)
