Match Report

Trim Celtic produced a 5 star performance to earn their first points of the season at the expense of Rock Celtic. The home side shot out of the blocks with Derek Donohoe rising highest to powerfully head home Keith Jones' free kick. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 as Aaron Ryan raced through before firing through the hands of the Rock keeper. Donohoe tried an audacious effort from the centre circle drift narrowly wide but he wasn't to be denied his second as he raced through on 26 minutes and finished with a sublime chip over the keeper. The big striker was unplayable and volleyed narrowly wide while surrounded by a glut of opposing defenders. Trim keeper Iain Telford wasn't tested until the dying minutes of the half when he produced a fine save from a breaking corner, given the timing it was an important save as a goal just before the break may have given Rock a shot in the arm.
Trim's Paul Munnelly was forced off through injury shortly into the second half with John Regan replacing him and Ger Dwane switching into centre back alongside captain Cyril Halton. Both Dwane and left full back Ruairi Shortt showed maturity beyond their years in an impressive clean sheet performance. Another fine save from Telford down to his left kept a resurgent Rock Celtic at bay while at the other end Donohoe was denied his hat-trick by the visiting keeper. Anthony Craig almost made it 4 but he just could stretch enough to get enough on Eoin O'Connor's driven cross. Telford's final save of the match was his best as he strained every sinew in his body to tip Derek Delay's top corner bound shot over the bar. Any chance the visitors had of a comeback were dashed as their centre back, frustrated at Donohoe's strength, lashed out and received a second yellow. Aaron Ryan forced a fine save from the keeper and Eoin O'Connor struck the upright before Donohoe turned provider unselfishly laying the ball off to Keith Jones to tap home a fourth. Celtic's fifth came off the boot of a defender as Donohoe attempted to square the ball to substitute Jack Kelly. While Donohoe stood out, Iain Telford and young full-backs Ger Dwane and Ruairi Shortt also caught the eye.
