Match Report

Trim Celtic Green played Parkvilla Red n the 12 NECSL Cup Final in a sunny MDL. Unbeaten all season in the Premier Division Parkvilla were favourites heading into the clash however the Trim squad unbeaten since January and having won last years Colm Cooper Cup, were confident of a big performance. Trim started with great intensity as planned and took the game to Parkvilla. Tireless running, tackling and attacking paid off as Trim took an early lead after 8 minutes. A Tadhg Carty run on the edge of the box showed the Trim spirit on the day, as his sheer determination saw him force his way through several players and finish to the back of the net. The huge Trim support were gripped by what they were seeing. The intensity of the play allowed little time on the ball for the players and the half was dominated by goal mouth action from set pieces and kick outs with Trim having the better of the exchanges. Diarmuid Doyle in goal made a couple of telling saves. Ahead of him Victor Garbu, Nico Fragoyiannis and Ronan McGinley were composed under several aerial assaults and breaks. The midfield of Sam Kennedy, James Foley, Finn Maher and Tadhg Carty put in a wonderful half hour of determined tackling and attacking. Up front Shane Bell was leading the line selflessly, chasing down defenders and always looking to create scoring opportunities.
After the break the pattern of play was similar but midway through the half Parkvilla created some chances and whilst Trim defended heroically at times, a quality strike saw Parkvilla level the match. From there on both sides pushed for the winner with the intensity of the exchanges leaving all supporters gripped, with no quarter being asked for or given. Full time blew and extra time of five minutes aside was announced.
The first half saw both sides null each other out but the second half saw both sides create potential winning goals. Celtic finished stronger and at the death had excellent efforts from Foley, Maher and Kennedy to seal the win but time ran out and penalties beckoned. A tense penalty shoot out saw both sides convert their initial five kicks. Fragoyiannis, Foley, Bell, Garbu and Carty dispatched five unstoppable shots. Sudden death saw Kennedy, Maher, goalkeeper Doyle and Collins continue the great display of accuracy. With all nine finishing players scoring, the sudden death continued with the tension getting unbearable. Unbelievably Fragoyiannis, Foley & Bell cooly dispatch their kicks for the second time whilst being matched by Parkvilla. Unfortunately Trim missed their next penalty, after a re-take, and Parkvilla were 13-12 winners. A devastating loss on paper but the display of skill, determination and spirit of these young players will be the enduring memory of all Trim Celtic supporters present.
