Match Report

In an eagerly anticipated final, Trim Celtic emerged victorious by a deserved 2 goal margin Celtic started this match liked they meant business and indeed were 1 up after only 3 minutes when a Josh Harris cross from the right hand side was met at the far post by the incoming David Boyle who drove the ball bullet like across the goals in to the bottom right hand corner of the net past the helpless Parkvilla keeper. The same combination almost doubled Celtic’s lead 3 minutes later when a pass from David put Josh through but his shot was pushed out for a corner by the keeper. Celtic did get their 2nd goal in the 12th minute when Josh Harris was on hand to pounce in the box following a goalmouth scramble from a Celtic corner. Celtic were well on top and their pressure almost resulted in a 3rd goal when a David Boyle flick put Kris Gorman through but his fine strike came back off the post and rebounded to safety. Just a minute later Celtic had an even better chance to go 3 up when Josh Harris was brought down in the box but Ciaran Caulfield’s penalty was well saved by the Parkvilla keeper. Ciaran almost made amends 5 minutes later when he went on a mazy run but was unlucky with his final shot. At this stage the Celtic supporters were hoping that these misses would not come back to haunt us and indeed but for a superb save by James Bourke in the 29th minute, Parkvilla would have pulled a goal back. Despite this there was time for another Celtic chance just before half time when a shot by Josh Harris was saved by the keeper. Celtic had reached half time with a 2 goal lead but felt that they should have been even further in front based on their efforts in the 1st half. Celtic turned over and continued where they left off. 5 minutes in Ciaran Caulfield broke through the Parkvilla defence but his shot went just wide of the right hand post with the keeper well beaten. Celtic thought that they had got a 3rd from a corner in the 43rd minute when Kris Gorman was on hand at the back post but his header came back of the cross bar. Ciaran Caulfield again found himself in behind the Parkvilla defence in the 50th minute but this time his shot just flew over the bar. The elusive 3rd goal never came for Celtic but in truth they were never seriously troubled in the final 10 minutes and ran out deserving winners of the Gerry Browne Cup. Amid wild and sometimes wet celebrations, Ciaran Caulfield accepted the Cup on behalf of his teammates and made a gracious acceptance speech after receiving the Cup. In a superb and controlled performance by Celtic there were heroes all over the pitch, but special mention must go to Blake Gibbons in defence, Kris Gorman, Joey Cole and David Boyle in the middle and Josh Harris up front who maintained his record of scoring every round of the Cup. Next up is a league match against Kells Navy in the MDL on Tuesday followed by a Shield semi-final against arch rivals Parkvilla Reds at the same venue next Saturday.
