Match Report

Celtic safely negotiated their way into the NECSL Cup quarter finals with a fine victory over Division One outfit Johnstown at the MDL grounds in Navan. Playing into the wind in the first half Celtic survived a couple of scary moments before Andreas Lopez settled nerves with a wonderful strike after ten minutes. Lopez picked up the ball outside the area and drifted in from the left beating his man before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The second goal arrived fifteen minutes later when some good work down the left from Liam Reilly resulted in his low cross shot being bundled in at the far post by James Murray. It was always going to be difficult for Johnstown to overturn the deficit with the Hoops having the wind behind them and the game was over as a contest fifteen minutes in when Evan deCourcey Tobin poked the ball in for the third goal.
Substitute Conor McGinley then got in on the act with a crisp low finish with five minutes to go and there was still time for man-of-the-match Andreas Lopez to bag his second. Lopez picked the ball up near the halfway line and went on a mazy run leaving four defenders for dead before slotting the ball home. The result was a bit harsh on Johnstown who gave as good as they got, especially in the first half. Best for Celtic were Andreas Lopez, James Murray, Jack Vaughan and Liam Reilly.
