Match Report

Trim Celtic scorers: Henri Devine 2,Sam Lynch
The final score gives a false impression of what was a very competitive game between 2 teams who were well matched for 50 minutes. On a calm bright morning Trim opened the scoring after 7 minutes when Henri Devine outpaced the Virginia defence to finish. After 15 minutes Virginia equalised through a soft penalty. The match was evenly contested until half time.
Having started out a calm day the wind picked up markedly for the second half and Virginia made the most of it scoring on 32 minutes. Celtic equalised almost immediately again through Henri Devine getting on the end of a fine move which involving Aidan Scott, David White and Dylan Smith. The Trim side played most of the second half under pressure and Virginia retook the lead on 36 minutes. Despite the best efforts of Trim defence who battled extremely hard to keep Virginia out with Finn O Connor and Sean McPhillips on the right and Casper Jagodzinski and Sam Lynch down the left all doing well. Arnas Mineikis and Dylan Smith in central midfield worked tirelessly to win the ball and put Trim on the front foot. After 42 minutes Sam Lynch latched on to a through ball and beat the keeper with a clever chip from 12 yards. Trim spent the next 10 minutes defending against a strong Virginia team and Jack Fagan worked hard up front to keep Virginia busy. They held out until the 54th minute when Virginia scored a fourth goal and while Celtic searched for an equaliser they conceded again on 58 minutes before Virgina netted again on the stroke of full time. Nathan McCormack came on with 20 minutes to play and played solidly on the right hand side. There were strong performances from a number of players in difficult second half conditions but the Man of the Match went to Donal McGale who despite the scoreline gave an exceptional performance in goal for Trim combining some excellent saves with safe handling and excellent communication with the defence. Celtic deserved something from this game and were a little unfortunate to come away with nothing.
