Match Report

A first half 25 minute hat trick from Brian Faulkner helped Trim Celtic's continue their red hot run of form as they disposed of Premier Division leaders Abbey Celtic at the MDL. The Trim side showed their intentions from the off with Brian Faulkner's header from Zak McGowan's cross forcing the Abbey keeper into a fine save in the first minute. The visitors had an early chance of their own when they beat the offside trap but couldn't finish. Trim took the lead in the 13th minute when in-form striker Brian Faulkner converted after Colm Carney's initial effort was cleared off the line. On 20 minutes the same two players combined with the same result as Carney released Faulkner who rounded the keeper to slot home. Five minutes later Faulkner, brimming with confidence, completed his hat trick with an opportunist strike from 35 yards after spotting the keeper off his line. A penalty on the half hour mark have the league leaders a glimmer of hope and something to chase in the second half.
On 50 minutes the home side restored their three goal lead when a surging run from Sean FitzGerald saw him beat three players before squaring to Paul Campbell to finish to an empty net. Minutes later the Drogheda side were reduced to ten when a straight red card was produced to a player for lashing out at McGowan. Abbey pulled a goal back on 65 minutes but the result , and a sixth straight victory in all competitions, was confirmed by substitute Declan Dowling scoring his first senior goal for the club. Abbey were reduced to nine men before the end with a player receiving two quick bookings.
