Match Report

Trim Celtic cruised through to the second round of the Challenge Cup with a comprehensive victory over Division 2 side Oldcastle Utd. The first 20 minute were cagey with both sides sizing each other up but Celtic broke the deadlock on the half hour when Brian Faulkner converted Mark Leavy's cross. Paul Campbell was denied by the crossbar before Leavy doubled the home side's lead in the 42nd minute with a neat finish from 20 yards after a lay off from Faulkner. The remaining minutes of the half were action packed with Oldcastle shooting narrowly wide before forcing a save from Trim keeper Iain Telford. There was still time for Leavy and Campbell to both hit the bar in the same attack.
Two Colm Carney goals within 15 minutes of the restart sealed the victory for Trim Celtic. The first from the edge of the box and the second a cracking finish from 25 yards with Faulkner assisting on both occasions. Eoin O'Connor made it 5-0 with a bullet header from a corner before Sean FitzGerald and a double from Faulkner to complete a hat trick of both goals and assists for the striker.
