Match Report

Trim Celtic Gunners made the trip to Virginia on Saturday morning minus their regular goalkeeper James Bourke and the injured Josh Harris. David Boyle stepped up to the plate to take James’s place between the sticks and acquitted himself quite well. The game started evenly enough but once the Gunners took the lead in the 6th minute from then on there looked like there was only going to be one winner. Ciaran Caulfield accepted a Harry Cottrell pass and despite rounding the keeper and leaving himself an acute angle he finished to the net for the opener. Indeed the Gunners could have added a 2nd just 2 minutes later when a brilliant run and cross by Ciaran Caulfield somehow seemed to elude Kris Gorman in the box. Celtic were well on top now and could have had their 2nd in the 17th minute when a Ciaran Caulfield free was well saved by the keeper. The Trim side did increase their lead in the 23rd minute when another Caulfield cross was this time finished to the net by Kris Gorman. The visitors quickly made it 3-0 a minute later when a superb ball from his own half by Joey Cole found Ciaran Caulfield on the run and he raced through to slot the ball home. Virginia did have a chance to pull one back in the 27th minute but the shot was well saved by David Boyle. The 2nd half started with Trim Celtic still in control and in the 34th minute Joey Cole and Ciaran Caulfield again combined well resulting in an inviting cross along the edge of the six yard box which was just waiting for someone to convert. Virginia did pull a goal back in the 37th minute but the 3 goal lead was quickly restored when a Virginia defender put through his own net after the keeper had made a fine save from a Ciaran Caulfield free. Trim Celtic kept pressing forward and were very dangerous on the break, Harry Cottrell was unlucky with a fine shot in the 40th minute and Joey Cole was unlucky in the 46th minute when his free kick rebounded back from the base of the post. Three minutes later it was 5-1 when Ciaran Caulfield completed his hat trick with a free that just crept inside the far post. He could have had a 4th with a shot following a corner and 2 minutes later he also had another chance from a shot following a move the length of the pitch from the keeper to James Molloy. The 6th and final goal came in the last minute when James Molloy again feed Ciaran Caullfield who crossed for Kris Gorman to complete the scoring. Best for Trim Celtic were Wes Gibbons at the back, James Molloy who seems to be developing a good understanding with Ciaran Caulfield down the left, the 3 central midfielders Joey Cole, Harry Cottrell & Kris Gormanand man of the match and captain for the day, Ciaran Caulfield who once again terrorised the opposition defence. Trim Celtic Squad: David Boyle, Shaun Mulryan, James Molloy, Harry Cottrell, Blake Gibbons, Ciaran Caulfield, Joey Cole, Kris Gorman, Aaron McCormack, Sean Tully, Wesley Gibbons, Kian Oliver, Evan Kennedy
