For the first time in seven years Trim Celtic had two teams drawn together in the national cup competition and there was great excitement in Tully Park on Saturday morning when the Premier team met their Division 1 counterparts.
In a game which was more keenly contested than the scoreline suggests the Premier team started brightly and were ahead inside two minutes through Evan deCourcy Tobin after great work down the touchline by Andreas Lopez and James Murray. An excellent Conor McGinley goal was followed by a James Murray header and a great solo effort by Andreas Lopez to make it 4-0 within fifteen minutes and the tie was virtually over as a contest. The Division 1 team, however, came back strongly and were unlucky to have nothing to show for their efforts at half time. A great save by Premier ‘keeper Luke Doyle, who pushed a goal-bound shot onto the post, followed by a goal mouth scramble left the Division 1 side cursing their luck at the interval.
Within five minutes of the re-start the Premier outfit were out of sight with second goals for both Lopez and McGinley killing off any resistance from the Division 1 team. There was still time for two cool finishes by Andrew Gibney, a fine strike by Fionn McEvoy and two goals from super sub Kevin McGowan to round off the scoring for the Premier team with a late consolation for Sean Foley the only cheer for the Division 1 team. In spite of the scoreline there was an impressive performance from Division 1 ‘keeper Peter Brennan who pulled off some fine saves and was very unfortunate to be on the receiving end of such a scoreline. Best for Trim Celtic Premier were Conor Mc Ginley, Andreas Lopez and James Murray. The managers and players of Trim Celtic Premier wish Division 1 manager Padraic Dunne a speedy recovery from the accident which meant he couldn’t take his place on the touchline. We hope to see you back soon.
