MDL Kick Off Postponed

As a result of the dreadful weather recently, the Meath & District League postponed the entire programme of games scheduled for this coming week, including the Club’s Premier Division opener against Square United at Tully Park this afternoon. The same programme of games has been moved back one week when it is hoped that improved weather conditions will see a return to football in the MDL.

Celts Miss Cut in Talteann Cup

Despite quite a good showing by the Club Seniors last night against Ardee Celtic at the MDL Grounds, they failed to reach the decider in the Tailteann Cup after a 1-1 draw with the Louth side. Instead Ardee go on to play host side Parkvilla in the final.

Aaron Newman (pictured) was on target for Celtic who again fielded with a much disrupted team for a variety of reasons. Paul Campbell was suspended & David Conway was unfit to line out as a result of his hamstring injury.

Mark Scanlon took charge on the night in the absence of Tony O’Sullivan & Martin Kerr neither of whom could not make the game.

Conway Injury

The Club’s Senior Team Manager Tony O’Sullivan is faced with the possibility of Player of the Year David Conway missing the start of the new season as a result of a hamstring injury that he picked up last Monday afternoon very early in the Tailteann Cup game against Parkvilla.

David suffered the injury after only a few minutes & must now be doubtful for the big kick off next Sunday week.

Seniors Struggle in Tailteann Cup

The Club Seniors kicked-off their Tailteann Cup campaign on Saturday last with a 2-2 draw against LSL side Ratoath Harps. Celtic took a 2-0 lead after 30 mins. The first goal game came from a well worked set-piece which saw Ross Campbell square for Aaron Newman to tap-in his first Senior goal. Within five mins Celtic were two up when Paul Campbell’s header rebounded off the post & Gavin Meehan was on hand to follow-up. Ratoath scored a crucial goal before the break & dominated most off the second half & scored a deserved equaliser on the hour mark. Parkvilla & Ardee Celtic had earlier drawn 1-1.

Seniors Kick off Pre-Season

Tony O’Sullivan’s Senior team kicked off their pre-season programme with a 5 - 3 defeat by Leinster Senior League side Dunboyne AFC. Celtic took the lead through Craig O’Hanlon; O’Hanlon scored a second goal while Anthony Craig also netted. The game was an even contest throughout &  was level with 20  minutes to go but Dunboyne pulled away with two late goals to win the game. The game marked the Senior debuts of the impresssive Niall Murray in goal, Aaron Newman, Cormac O’Malley & the return to the Celtic Senior team of Patrick Peppard. Richard Fitzsimons, Newman, Murray & Mick Corrigan impressed on the day.

Next weekend the Seniors have two games lined up in the Parkvilla sponsored Tailteann Cup. On Saturday afternoon at 4pm they take on Ratoath Harps & on Monday afternoon at 2pm they are scheduled to play Parkvilla. Their final group game against Ardee Celtic is fixed for Wednesday of next week at 7.30pm when they will hopefully be in contention for a top two place & a ticket to the decider. By then new manager Tony O’Sullivan will know the extent of the task ahead of him as he prepares for the start of the new MDL season in three weeks’ time. All of the abobve games will be played at Claremont Stadium.

Up & Running!

The 2008/9 season for the Club got off to a winning start yesterday when the Reserves, under the guidance of new manager Chris O’Connor defeated MDL side Skryne/Tara by the odd goal in five at the Community School pitch.

Ritchie Fitzsimons headed a first half equaliser to leave the scores level at the break & two goals from Patrick Peppard were enough to win the game, a useful work out after all the hard work at midweek training. The wining goal was scored by Peppard from the spot after he was fouled.

Next Saturday the Reserves line out against Longwood at Tully Park, kick off 3pm & on next Sunday the Seniors travel to take on Dunboyne from the Major Division of the Leinster Senior League in Dunboyne. Kick off is fixed for 11am.
