AC Delray scorers: Aidan McAuley, Riley Donelan, Garrett Frazier, Connor Ladd
In a highly entertaining game the USA gained revenge for last week’s senior international defeat to the Republic of Ireland as AC Delray beat Trim Celtic at Tully Park. A huge crowd gathered to welcome former Trim Celtic great Clem McAuley and his teamalong with their parents from Delray Beach in Florida.
The game was end to end with Jared Akigbesote squeezing a shot in target on five minutes. At the other end a superb turn by Riley Donelan set up a scoring chance but the ever alert Wesley Gibbons blocked superbly with AC heading narrowly wide from the resulting corner. Akigbesote then set up Ciaran Caulfield for a great chance but he skewed wide. A fiercly stuck shot from a Delray forward sailed just over before Caulfield again got on the end of an Akigbesote pass only to be foiled by the excellent Floridian keeper. Celtic keeper Kevin Dalton made two excellent saves shortly before the break, tipping one shot over and then coming out swiftly in a one on one. Akigbesote flashed a shot across the face of goal as the first half drew to a close.
Seconds after the restart the visitors took the lead from the penalty spot as goalkeeper Aidan McAuley followed in his father’s footsteps by scoring on the hallowed Tully Park turf.
A minute later Celtic were level as David Boyle blasted into the top corner from 35 yards out to send the home support into raptures. Man of the Match Riley Donelan converted from close range to give Delay the lead again on 53 minutes before a superb volley by Garrett Frazier gave them a two goal cushion. Following a late challenge on Oran Kirby Celtic were awarded a penalty which Joey Cole superbly slotted home.
Conor Ladd restored Delray’s lead from close range before McAuley pulled off a superb one handed safe to deny Kirby in the last chance of the game.
After the match both sets of players and some of the younger members of the AC Delray travelling party were presented with Trim Celtic 50th Anniversary medals while both clubs made presentations to each other and Delray Coach Clem McAuley thanked the club and the people of Trim for the hospitality they have received to date. Clem was also reunited with the Dr. Brody Cup for Senior Player of the Year he won in 1984 as a 16 year old.
