Trim Celtic made it into the Semi Final of this years Challenge Cup with a solid 3 nil win against visitors Cavan Town. With Cavan Towns amazing run in this years FAI Junior Cup still continuing Trim could in no way underestimate the challenge of the visitors and indeed the opening exchanges showed just way Cavan have beaten some of the top Junior Clubs in the country this year. Cavan played a very hard physical game with some borderline tackling but Trim were well up for this one and the from the start Trims front men of Donohoe and Gilsenan showed they were prepared to close down and push hard at the Cavan defence. This seemed to disrupt Cavans game plan and they were forced to abandon their short passing game. Trims opener after 15 mins came slightly against the run of play. A knock on by Gilsenan was chased all the way by Donohoe and his determination saw him get to the ball ahead of the Cavan keeper to toe poke the ball into the net. Trim then took over the game and when Mick Corrigan won a superb tackle in the middle of the park, Dimmy Higgins raced down the wing and crossed low for Donohoe to finish stylishly from close range. Trim controlled the second half well but Cavan will have been disappointed not to have pulled a goal back when their center forward blazed over from 5 yards out with 15mins remaining. Then a good move involving Scott McGowan and Paul Gilsenan saw Paul Campbells effort come back off the bar. Trims substitutes brought some fresh ideas into what was an extremely hard fought game marshaled very well by referee J Dyas. Trim wrapped up the win when the impressive Paul Campbell’s corner was met powerfully by Trim Celtic captain David Conway.
