Trim Celtic bounced back from their FAI Cup exit with an emphatic away win against the currant league champions Rock Celtic. In a difficult assignment having just returned from a long away trip to Clonmel the men from Trim showed true grit and amazing attitude to totally dominate this game. The opening 20 mins of the game saw Trim first to every ball and prepared to work extremely hard for each other. Paul Campbell almost made the breakthrough on the 20 min mark when he saw his header from 8 yards out just go the wrong side of the post. With David Conway in outstanding form it was his ball to Derek Donohoe that resulted in the first goal. Donohoe collected the pass just inside the rock half. He raced forward with it and then chipped it beautifully over the advancing Rock Celtic keeper. Trim continued to hold possession well but when Rock were awarded a corner it took a point blank save by Barry O’Callaghan to deny Rock the equalizer. Trim were then awarded a penalty when a shot from Mark McCormack was blatantly handled inside the box. Paul Campbell stepped forward to calmly put Trim 2 up at half time. The second half started just as the first ended with Trims defence of Jones, Halton, Conway and Gilsenan in totally domination and the midfield of Campbell and Corrigan winning all the 50-50 balls. Scott McGowan covered any potential threat Rock had out wide and Mark McCormack was a constant threat to the Rock defence. But it was the striking partnership of Paul Gilsenan and Derek Donohoe who put in an unbelievable nights work in closing down any movement of the ball from the Rock rearguard. Trims 3rd came with 20 mins remaining and it was the pick of the night. Mick Corrigan played the ball to Donohoe’s feet, and with his back to goal he turned and let fly from 35yards. The ball was in the back of the net before anybody realized but Donohoe was quickly surrounded by his teammates to celebrate. Richie Fitzsimons was introduced to tighten up the back line, Dimmy Higgins pace from the bench caused more problems for the Rock Defence when he was introduced and Colm Harte’s experience and speed was not what Rock wanted to see when they were 3-0 down. At the end of the day it was only just 3 points but it was the manner in which the entire squad approached this game, played for the entire 90 mins, scored 3 goals and kept a clean sheet that was most pleasing.
