Having lost 1 – 0 to Mullingar Town in the same competition two years ago Celtic were hoping to exact revenge on the home side but were again eliminated from the Cup. Celtic started brightly with David Conway coming close with a header and Keith Jones volleying narrowly wide. Mullingar were dangerous on the break and took the lead following such a break midway through the half.
In the second half Celtic struggled to create any clear cut chances and relied on some fine saves by keeper Colm Harte to keep them in the game. However Mullingar doubled their lead when a free kick caused a mix up in the Celtic defence which allowed their striker to tap the ball into an empty net. Celtic rallied and enjoyed their best spell but couldn’t find a way through, final score Mullingar Town 2 – 0 Trim Celtic.
Best on the day were David Conway, Mick Corrigan and Mark Gilsenan.
