After the events of the last few weeks the focus now moves firmly back to the playing fields as the Club Seniors bid to win the MDL Premier Division trophy for the first time in this the 40th Anniversary year of the Club’s founding.
Since 1967 there have been many great occasions produced by great Club sides – the team that Christy Ginnerty managed in the 1970’s and the one managed by Tony Donohoe in the 1980s both spring to mind. Both of these great sides performed heroics in their day to thrill all local Celtic fans. The team that Alan Kirwan put together six years ago to win the MDL Challenge Cup was also one to remember – who can forget the celebrations after that Cup win in 2001?
Next Tuesday in Slane the present Seniors play the rescheduled Premier League game against Slane Wanderers bidding to set up a dramatic last day of fixtures next Sunday week. Celtic are home to Rock Celtic from Dundalk (recently defeated in the MDL Challenge cup Final by Navan town) on the 20th May. A win in both games by Trim will bring the title to Tully Park for the first time. A win in Slane and a draw in Trim against Rock will be enough if Square – poised in third palce, draw their last game away to Albion Rovers on 20th.
Manager Alan Kirwan will be well aware however that combinations exist also for the chance to be thrown away but he will be working hard to see that his players remain focused on the job in hand and land the biggest prize in local football for the Club.
Everyone associated with the Club wishes them well in their preparation for these two big games. Come on ye Celts!
Kick off next Tuesday in Slane is down for 7.15pm and the two games on Sunday week are scheduled to start simultaneously at 2.30pm.
