SFAI Cup Defeat for 11A’s

After the disappointment of two blank weekends the Club’s Schoolboys were back in action today at home & away in the last action before Christmas.

At Tully Park the 11As took on visitors Glebe North from the NDSL for a place in the last 16 of the SFAI Menton/Seery Cup but it was the visitors who went through after a hard fought 1-0 victory over their Trim hosts. Celtic will rue the numerous chances missed from start to finish of this exciting game & managers Gerry Harte & Peter Madden will know that a better opportunity to progress in the final stages of a national cup may not come around again. Trim created far more scoring opportunities that the opposition thanks to a great all round effort which was not rewarded with the victory it deserved. Pictures shows some defensive action by the Trim Celtic back line (blue jerseys). For more pictures click here.

The 11Bs also played at Tully Park this morning & enjoyed an impressive league Div 2 win over visitors Torro Utd. Luke Osborne & Ryan Tuoghy were on target to send Kieron Fletrcher’s team into their Christmas break well satisfied with their day’s work. Keeper Eamon McGloughlin gave another impressive display especially late in the game when the visitors pressed hard for an equaliser.

Ron Metcalfe travelled to Kingscourt with the 13As & came home with all three Div 1 league points after a tough encounter with the local Harps. Jack Reilly, Aaron Winters & Colin Stowe (penalty) were the scorers in a 3-1 win but the occasion was marred by an injury to Jack Reilly which necessitated him being brough to hospital by ambulance after a dreadful foul by an opposition player which to the amazement of the Trim contingent did not result in a red card.

Only three Schoolboy games were played today. Fixtures resumke early in the New Year.

Another Washout

For the second time this season the Club suffered a complete washout of fixtures this weekend as a result of all the recent heavy rainfall. Not a single one of the ten scheduled games – home or away was played.

Picture shows Tully Park under water two seasons ago & whilst its condition was not quite as bad this weekend -mainly thanks to all of the work carried out in recent months on both pitches, it was still far from playable like most other pitches in the region.

MDL Reserve Cup

The 1st Round draw for the MDL Reserve Cup this season sees the Club’s Reserves managed by Luke Dempsey, take to the road to play Newtown Utd from the A Reserve Division. Newtown are comfortably placed mid-table at present with games in hand to play. The game is scheduled to be played over the next few weeks, probably early in January. Celtic are the current holders of the trophy having won it for the last two seasons.

In 2005/6 the Club played five games to win the trophy beating Enfield 7-0, Carrick Rovers on penalties after a 2-2 draw, Kentstown Rovers 2-1, OMP on penalties also after another 2-2 draw & Glenmuir in the final 2-1. Robert Bradley & Danny Quinn were in charge of the Reserves that season & one of the features of the cup run was the performance of Colm Harte in goal in saving twice from the spot in each of the penelty shoot outs.

Last season it took no less than six games to retain the trophy. First up was Slane who were defeated 4-0 in Slane in late November. In January OMP were beaten 2-0 & in April Longwood & then the Club Thirds (managed by Mick Craig) were put to the sword. Gavin Meehan scored the all importamnt only goal of the semi final against Square Utd in Tully Park & a week later goals by Andy Reilly & Danny Quinn landed the trophy as the Reserves saw off Glaslough Villa 2-1. Luke Dempsey was the manager last season assisted by David Tully.

Eleven games since they tasted defeat & hopes are high that another successful run will start in Newtown. A number of players lined out in both winning finals – Andy Reilly who is the current holder of the Barry Cup for Reserve Team Player of the Year, Danny Quinn, Mark Scanlon who is team Captain again this season, Paul Munnelly, Alan McCormack, Strevie Ennis & Noel Payne.

Picture shows last year’s captain Mark Scanlon speaking after presentation of the trophy in Dundalk where the final was played.
