Colm Smith & Jamie Lee make NEC Foyle Cup Squad

Colm Smith & Jamie Lee

Two of the Club’s brightest young prospects are off this summer to compete in the prestigious Foyle Cup in Derry having been selected to represent the NECSL in this year’s tournament. Colm Smith and Jamie Lee (pictured) line out with the Club’s U15s under the management of Shay Lee and Brendan Smith and their selection is just reward for the many sterling performances turned out by both boys for the Club over the last couple of years.

The Foyle Cup is a premier event in the International Schoolboy football calendar and the NECSL will be up against professional and amateur teams from all over Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe. The tournament is run over a week in early July and provides a feast of top class games for spectators who travel from far and near to see them. Manchester United, Celtic, Nottingham Forest & Everton are amongst the teams that take part each year in addition to selections representing our own National League and many regional Schoolboy Leagues also.

Congratulations to both boys on their selection – well done!

Cup Defeat for Seniors

The Club Senior Team was beaten 0-2 this afternoon in the MDL Grounds in the semi-final of the MDL Challenge Cup. An early penalty gave Rock Celtic the lead and another goal after the break sealed the win for the Co. Louth side. Celtic managed to test the opposition keeper on a number of occasions and had a goal disallowed, but it was not to be and hopes are now that the team’s League campaign will end successfully over the next few weeks.

Well done to the players and management on flying the flag all the way to the penultimate stage.

Celtic’s U15 keeper Dylan Murnin may have been beaten from the spot in his team’s League match against Kells but he had the last laugh when his team ran out 3-2 winners! The game also featured the last display in a Celtic shirt by Shaun Curran who was pictured before the game with manager Shay Lee (below).

Schoolboy Results

Five of the Club’s schoolboy sides took to the field today and they recorded four wins and one defeat in NECSL League matches.

The U15s beat visitors Kells at Tully Park to keep themselves in contention for runner up spot in Division 1. Damien McGee hit two and Diarmuid Higgins scored the other in a deserved win.

The U14s comfortably beat Borora also in Tully Park by a score of 6-0 to remain on target for the Division 2 title. Darragh Scannell hit four first half goals and Darren Melia hit the other two in the second half. His first was a header (pictured above) and his second came from the spot (pictured below).

The U13s had Joey Corrigan to thank for their away victory over East Meath. He scored in a 1-0 win which moves the team to joint top of Division 1 with only two games remaining – both at home. First up are Carrick Rovers and then the showdown with Kentstown Rovers.

The U12s scored the only goal of the game at home to Athboy to secure three more league points – Gareth White was on target.

The only team not to win today was the U11s who went down 1-3 at home to Kells in their last league match of the season. Stephen Moroney was on target. The U11s were crowned League Champions three weeks ago.

MDL Cup Semi Final on Sunday

Never mind the International match on Saturday, the big game of the wekend for Trim sport’s fans will take place at the MDL Grounds on Sunday afternoon when the Club Seniors take on Rock Celtic from Dundalk in the semi final of the Meath & District Challenge Cup.

The Club’s only victory to date in the MDL Challenge Cup was back in 2001 when a converted penalty by Kevin Meehan and a second half strike by Brian Smith won the cup for the Club and Alan Kirwan’s team will be hoping to get through to the decider again on Sunday at the expense of the Premier Division leaders. Alan has made a special appeal to all of the Club’s supporters to come along to support his team. Managers of the Club’s many Schoolboy sides are especially asked to bring along as much support as possible.

The only selection worries faced by Alan concern Mark Gilsenan who suffrered a minor injury in training this week and Cyril Halton who is recovering from a slight illness. Both are expected to be available for selection. Kick off is 2.30pm.

Come on ye Celts!
