This Weekend’s Match Reports - 4 Wins, 2 Draws, 1 Defeat and 44 Goals

Premier Division
Trim Celtic 4 - 4 Slane
Halftime: 1 - 1
Trim Celtic scorers: Paul Gilsenan 2, David Conway, Colm Harte
Honours were even in this entertaining match. Slane took the lead within the first five minutes with a header from a corner. Celtic fought back strongly and had Slane under pressure from two Ross Campbell corners before David Conway headed home Mark Gilsenan’s corner. Colm Harte was in superb form down the Celtic right wing and had two Slane defenders cautioned for fouls caused by his trickery and pace. From a free kick earned by Harte Paul Gilsenan headed just over.
The second half was a lively affair with Celtic taking the lead within the first few minutes when Harte jinked on the edge of the box before rifling home. However Slane equalised with the next attack courtesy of a couple of errors in the Celtic defence. The work rate and driving runs of Shane Ashe has Slane in trouble all afternoon and one such burst led to a free kick on the edge of the box for Celtic. Paul Gilsenan gave Celtic the lead with a stunning free kick that gave the Slane keeper no chance. However Slane hit back again when a corner was cleared off the line by Ciaran Rispin however the breaking ball was struck home. As the game headed for fulltime Slane scored what looked to be the winner when another corner was not properly cleared and the rebound was finished to the net, despite handball claims by the Celtic team. With the game in the third minute of extra-time Mark Gilsenan’s long free kick caused confusion in the Slane defence, and brother ball seized the opportunity to volley home the equaliser.
Best for Trim Celtic were Colm Harte, Shane Ashe and Paul Gilsenan.

Navan Cosmos 5 - 4 Trim Celtic A.E.T
Halftime: 4 - 2
Trim Celtic scorers: Noel Payne 2, Mark Scanlon, Tommy Boyle
Sent off: Danny Quinn
After a poor first half Trim Celtic came back strongly to force extra time. Fielding a youthful side with a few more experienced players Celtic were unlucky to lose out in extra-time. Noel Payne continued his excellent form with two more goals with Tommy Boyle cracking home a superb volley while Mark Scanlon also scored. After clawing their way back to 4 - 4, Celtic were reduced to ten men when Danny Quinn was sent off for a foul in the box, the resulting penalty was converted to give Cosmos victory.
Best for Trim Celtic were Noel Payne, Adam Campbell and Alan McCormack.

NECSL Under 16 League
Trim Celtic 3 - 1 Oldcastle
Halftime: 1 - 0
Trim Celtic scorers: Graham Higgins, Ciaran Quinn, Alan Douglas
A lacklustre Trim were lucky to run out 3-1 winners against Oldcastle on Saturday. Trim started slowly and struggled to find their rhythm and were lucky not to be behind in the early stages, Graham Higgins put Trim in the lead in the 25th minute with a close range finish after good work from Alan Douglas. Douglas then had an attempt of his own when he turned well thirty yards from goal before firing in a shot which the keeper could only parry, however no Celtic players anticipated the spill by the keeper and the ball was cleared. Oldcastle came back strongly and headed narrowly wide before a they were awarded a penalty which, luckily for Celtic was blazed over the bar. In the closing stages of the half, Mark Corrigan shot wide from long range.
Trim Celtic started the 2nd half more determined with Alan Douglas sending in a low cross that was blazed back across the goal by Ciaran Quinn. Substitute John Pedan gave the visiting defence something different to think about as his strength and running unsettled them. Pedan forced a smart save by the Oldcastle keeper as he fired in a low shot, before he latched onto a Keith Way clearance to volley straight at the keeper. On fifty minutes left full back Mark Corrigan curled a beautiful ball in behind the Oldcastle defence with Pedan hitting the post from a tight angle. Five minutes later a lapse in concentration allowed Oldcastle in for a scrappy equaliser. Celtic upped their tempo with Ciaran Quinn whipping in some great crosses from the left wing. Celtic almost re-took the lead from a corner however Anthony Craig headed narrowly wide. With fifteen minutes Oldcastle gave away a needless free-kick when their keeper was adjudged to have handled outside the box. The resulting free-kick was well worked with Ciaran Quinn restoring Celtic’s lead. With ten minutes remaining Quinn turned provided as his free kick was volleyed home by Alan Douglas’ for Trims third. Not Trims best performance of the season by any means but an important 3 points that keeps them in touch with the leaders. A big improvement will be needed against Ardee next weekend. Best for Trim were Ciaran Quinn, Alan Douglas and Keith Way.

Midfield man, Conor Smith added a third in the 22nd minute. Agher were awarded a penalty of their own when Sean Hyland was harshly adjudged to have fouled in the box, in any case Agher shot wide.

Albion Rovers B 0 - 10 Trim Celtic
Halftime: 0 - 7
Trim Celtic scorers: Joan Lehmann 3, Sean FitzGerald 2, Sam Millen 2, Fionn Nally, James Toher (pen), O.G.
Trim Celtic U12s were drawn against Albion Rovers B team in the second round of the NECSL Cup today. On a good day for football, Trim turned on the style in the first half, scoring seven goals in the process. The first goal was scored by Sam Millen as early as the 7th minute, and Trim were 2-0 two minutes later when an Albion defender turned the ball into his own net. On 16 minutes, Fionn Nally, who was composed in midfield throughout, put Trim 3-0 up and after Sam Millen was pushed in the box, James Toher scored from the spot. Millen added his 2nd before Sean FitzGerald scored two good goals to put Trim 7-0 up at half time. Trim made 5 substitutions around half time and took some time to adjust to the new line up. Albion never really troubled Trim throughout but they were awarded a penalty midway through the 2nd half. James Mitchell did very well to save the penalty only to find out that he had to face it again after a Trim defended encroached into the penalty area. James pulled off a great save to keep a clean sheet. Joan Lehmann, after going up front in the 2nd half, did really well to score a hat-trick inside 8 minutes to finish the game off.

Trim Celtic scorer: Colin Stowe
Trim Celtic Under 11 got a well earned point against Athboy .This was a very even and well contested match with both teams playing some great football. Athboy took the lead after 15 minutes after continued pressure. This seemed to ignite Trim who then started to push forward looking for the equaliser, which came on 25 minutes with a great free kick from outside the box by Colin Stowe. In the second half both teams went all out for the winning goal,Trim came closest in the dying minutes from a great run down the wing from Malachy Joe Gavin who unleashed a shot which the keeper could not hold and the ball was spinning on the line until Athboy managed to clear it away before a Trim player knocked it in.This was a great game by two very good teams.

This Weekend’s Match Reports - Derby Win For 11s

Premier Division
Square Utd 3 - 2 Trim Celtic
Game abandoned after 65 minutes
Halftime: 1 - 1
Trim Celtic scorers: Ross Campbell, Dominic Martin
Sent off: Mick Corrigan
This was an evenly contested game which was still in the balance when the referee called a halt to proceedings in the 65th minute. Celtic started well with David Fagan and Craig O’Hanlon causing problem problems for the Square defence. Trim took the lead on fifteen minutes when Ross Campbell superbly headed home Ciaran Rispin’s free kick. Square equalised courtesy of a dubious penalty, for alleged handball in the box. Celtic bounced back with Keith Jones volleying narrowly wide before O’Hanlon first curled wide, then had an excellent shot superbly tipped over by the Square keeper.
Against the run of play Square took the lead from a well-taken free kick. However Trim Celtic again pressed forward and were rewarded with an equaliser when Dominic Martin coolly lobbed home. Square rallied again and took the lead with a header from a long free kick that went in off the post. Mick Corrigan was unlucky to receive his marching orders on the hour in an incident that only warranted a yellow card. Celtic did not get a chance to equalise as shortly afterwards the referee abandoned the game in controversial circumstances with twenty-five minutes to play.
Best for Trim Celtic were Craig O’Hanlon, David Fagan and Derek Dixon.

NECSL Under 12
Trim Celtic 2 - 1 Kells Boys
Halftime: 0 - 1
Trim Celtic scorers: Sam Millen (pen), Sean FitzGerald
Trim Celtic U12s came out on top of this tie but had to battle very hard throughout for the win. In the seventh minute, a long kick out from the Kells keeper resulted in confusion in the Trim defence and the striker was on hand to slot the ball away and give Kells the lead. This seemed to wake Trim up somewhat and they began to control the game. However, when in the final third of the pitch, the last ball or shot seemed to go astray and the Kells keeper was never really tested. At the break, Trim went in 1-0 down.
In the second half, Trim took the game to Kells in search of an equaliser and had a number of half chances. In the 40th minute, Celtic were awarded a penalty when Sam Millen was fouled, he took the kick himself sending the keeper the wrong way to equalise. In doing so, Sam scored his 200th goal for Trim Celtic in 3 1/2 years playing for the club. Trim then went in search of the winner and were rewarded in the 43rd minute when Sean FitzGerald slotted the ball past the keeper. Thereafter, Trim pushed for a third that would have put the game beyond reach for Kells and they were unlucky not to get that third goal on a few occasions especially after a shot from Sean McGee was superbly saved by the keeper. Trim did well to hold Kells out in the final few minutes and were deserved winners in the end.
Best for Trim Celtic were Joey Corrigan, Joan Lehmann and James Toher

SFAI Under 12 Cup
Trim Celtic 2 - 1 Kentstown
Halftime: 1 - 0
Trim Celtic scorers: Sean McGee, James Toher
Trim Celtic U12s are through to the last 32 of the SFAI Cup after a fantastic and very well deserved win over local rivals Kentstown. In what was always going to be a tough game, Trim started very well and kept their shape from the backs right through to the forwards. Trim pressed the game in the early stages and got through a lot of work, creating a couple of good chances. In the 10th minute, Trim pressure resulted in a free kick being awarded outside the Kentstown box. James Toher stepped up and floated a superb ball into the top corner of the goal, well away from the Kentstown goalkeeper and over the head of the full back. Trim took strength from this and continued to put Kentstown under pressure, indeed they were unlucky not to double the advantage, especially after Sam Millen rounded the keeper only to have his shot cleared by a retreating defender. Trim continued to dominate and any chances created by Kentstown were well cut out by the back line of O’Connor, Lehmann, Fitzsimons and Mullen. After the break, Kentstown made a couple of positional changes but were unable to get any joy from Trim who kept up the pressure and created a few more chances. In the 43rd minute, Trim broke down the left, finding Sean FitzGerald who crossed the ball into the box. Sam Millen left the ball to Sean McGee who sidefooted the ball into the net for a fine goal. This should have put the game beyond Kentstown however Kentstown were awarded a penalty for a foul that looked to have been outside the box. Cormac Madden stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong away and make the last ten minutes a quite tense affair. However, Trim held their nerve and saw out the remaining time to finish a fine game. Overall, it was one of Trim’s best games of the season, they put in a lot of effort throughout the team and thoroughly deserved their place in the last 32. Best for Trim Celtic were James Toher, Joey Corrigan, Joan Lehmann and Sean McGee. Trim face the All Blacks from the South East region in the next round.
Trim Celtic: Gareth White, Shane O’Connor, Gavin Mullen, Ciaran Fitzsimons, Joan Lehmann, Sean McGee, Fionn Nally, Joey Corrigan, Sean FitzGerald, Sam Millen, James Toher.

Under 16 Friendly
Trim Celtic 2 - 5 St. Kevin’s Boys
Halftime: 1 - 1
Trim Celtic scorer: Alan Douglas 2 (1pen)
Trim got their new year off to a bad start with a loss to top Dublin side St. Kevins Boys at Tully Park on Sunday. St. Kevins started the brighter but it was Trim who took the lead after a fine move resulted in Alan Douglas been taking down and winning a penalty which he converted himself. St. Kevins hit back five minutes later after a defensive lapse. Trim spurned a great chance to go into the lead just before the half but the teams went in level at the break. In the 2nd half both teams created some early chances but again Trims defensive frailites came to the fore as they conceded 2 goals in 5 minutes but to their credited Trim battled back and scored the goal of the game after another impressive move gave Alan Douglas the chance to volley his second of the game. Douglas almost put the teams level soon after but his header narrowly missed the target. Trim continued to work hard as they did throughout but as they pushed for an equaliser in the last 10 minutes they were caught on the break by 2 late goals to put a slightly unfair slant on the scoreline. Best for Trim were Colm Doyle, Aaron Newman and Keith Way.
Trim Celtic: Eric Scanlon, James Moynihan, Mark Corrigan, Keith Way, Philip O’Donohoe, Paul Genockey, Anthony Craig, Colm Doyle, Alan Douglas, Aaron Newman, Ciaran Quinn.
