This Weekend’s Match Reports - 1st Team Bow Out But 16’s Advance

FAI Junior Cup
Mullingar Town 1 - 0 Trim Celtic
In a tight game a single goal in the 80th minute was enough to give Mullingar victory. Celtic started brightly and almost took the lead when David Conway had a shot tipped around the post after excellent work from Craig O’Hanlon. Celtic had the ball in the Mullingar net on twenty minutes but the referee saw a push from the corner and disallowed the goal. Shortly afterwards Dominic Martin headed inches wide. At the other end Mullingar kept Celtic keeper Brendan Murphy occupied without ever testing him. Celtic lost midfielder Keith Jones through injury in the first half but his midfield companion David Fagan produced two surging runs only to denied by the last defender on each occasion.
Early in the second half Celtic lost another player to injury, this time it was Ross Campbell who had to be replaced. Celtic had another goal disallowed this time for a contentious offside as Craig O’Hanlon’s cross-shot was poked home by Mick Corrigan at the back post. Mullingar almost took the lead after a break down their right however with keeper Brendan Murphy beaten Dominic Martin arrived on time to clear the ball off the line. Celtic should have taken the lead from a Ciaran Rispin corner, however David Conway headed home when unmarked. With ten minutes remaining the home side took the lead after a break down their left which was finished well. Celtic thought they had a chance to draw level however the referee strangely awarded an indirect free kick rather than a penalty for a push on David Conway in the box. From the resulting free kick Celtic had their last chance when Conway shot over.
Best for Trim Celtic were David Fagan (pictured above), Brendan Murphy and Darren Fay
Trim Celtic: Brendan Murphy, Ciaran Rispin, Mark Gilsenan, Darren Fay, Dominic Martin, Mick Corrigan, Keith Jones, David Fagan, David Conway, Craig O’Hanlon, Ross Campbell.

SFAI Under 16 Cup

Halftime: 0 - 0
Trim Celtic scorers: Eric Scanlon, Colm Doyle, Graham Higgins
Trim Celtic advanced to the next round of the SFAI Cup after a fine win against Baldoyle at Tully Park on Saturday, Trim were unlucky not to be in front at half-time after Alan Douglas struck the post early on but in the second half Trim upped the pace even further and on the hour mark Colm Doyle put them in front with a fine first time shot from almost 30 yards, Doyle nearly doubled Trims advantage five mins later but hit the post after a Ciaran Quinn free-kick. Substitute Graham Higgins was in an uncompromising mood when he came on and he put Trim two up after a fine move that ended with Higgins beating three Baldoyle defenders and finishing coolly. With five minutes remaining Alan Douglas who was a constant threat all day was fouled in the box and goalkeeper Eric Scanlon slotted away the penalty to put the game beyond doubt. Best for Trim in this excellent team performance were Barry Flynn, Ciaran Quinn, Alan Douglas and Colm Doyle.

NECSL Under 12 League
Trim Celtic 8 - 1 Baileboro
Halftime: 5 - 0
Trim Celtic scorers: Sean FitzGerald 3, Joan Lehmann, Sean McGee, Gavin Mullen, Fionn Nally
Trim Celtic Under 12s ran out comfortable winners in this NECSL encounter. From the start, Trim took the game to Baileboro and had a number of chances inside the first few minutes with Baileboro’s keeper doing well to keep Trim out. However, it wasn’t long before Sean FitzGerald broke the deadlock on 12 minutes. From that moment on, Trim settled well and went on to score four more in the first half. Sean FitzGerald did very well in completing his hat-trick before the break, Sean McGee added another and Joan Lehmann rounded off the half with a brilliant individual goal after taking on most of the Baileboro defence. In the 2nd half, Trim brought on a number of substitutes and pushed Joan Lehmann and Gavin Mullen up front. Gavin’s impact was immediate with a fine finish from the right side of the box in the first minute of the half. Trim continued to dominate and in the 40th minute, Fionn Nally and Gavin Mullen worked a fine 1-2 with Fionn finishing off well. The game ended with Joan Lehmann getting onto the end of a cross in the box. Overall, it was a great performance by Trim with everyone doing well, especially Sean FitzGerald, Joan Lehmann and Ciarán Halpin.

This Weekend’s Match Reports - Albion Double over 1sts & 2nds

Premier Division
Trim Celtic 1 - 5 Albion Rovers
Halftime: 0 - 2

Albion took the lead from the penalty spot when Ciaran Rispin was harshly adjudged to have fouled an Albion player in the box. Albion doubled their lead halfway through the half when Albion broke down the left to cross to the back post where the ball was stabbed home.
In the second half Celtic started brightly but suffered a setback when a defensive error allowed Albion in to score an easy third. Celtic again rallied with substitutes Craig O’Hanlon and Shane Ashe giving the Albion defence something to think about. Celtic scored a deserved goal when Mick Corrigan headed home unmarked from Ross Campbell’s free kick. However two goals on the break as Celtic were pushing forward allowed Albion seal victory. Premier Reserve
Albion Rovers 4 - 3 Trim Celtic
Halftime: 1 - 1
Trim Celtic scorers: Shane Ashe 2, Seamus Harte.
Trim Celtic’s away form remains a worry after this defeat against a better Albion side. Celtic struggled in the early stages and fell behind before the lively Shane Ashe hit a rasping shot off the crossbar. Seamus Harte cancelled out Albion’s lead just before halftime as Celtic found themselves lucky to be level at the break.
On the resumption Shane Ashe gave Celtic an unlikely lead and headed over soon after in Celtic’s best spell of the game. On seventy minutes Albion equalised then took the lead from the penalty spot before Shane Ashe lobbed the keeper to level the scores again. Neither side seemed content with a draw but it was Albion who struck the winner with a free kick in the last minute. Despite defeat Trim Celtic remain on top of the league but a massive improvement away from home is needed if they are to stay there until the end of the season. Best for Trim Celtic were Shane Ashe, Danny Quinn and Seamus Harte.

Halftime: 0 - 1

Celtic took the lead on twenty minutes when Scott McGowan headed home Damien McGee’s free kick, a lead that was held until halftime. The second half was an even affair with both sides creating chances, however Dunboyne left it until injury time to equalise and force extra time. Celtic took the lead in extra time through Sean Foley and worked hard in defence and midfield to keep the lead.
