Athboy 1 Trim Celtic Supremos 1
A.E.T.; Athboy win 2-1 on penalties
MDL Under-9 League
November 11, 2004
Mark Farrell’s U-9 side lost out to Athboy – and a post! – in this exciting final on Thursday evening.
The Supremos fell behind to an early goal but struck back to leave it 1-1 at the break. A tense second-half failed to produce another goal although the Supremos, matching Athboy’s technique and physical strength with superb ball skill and passing, came close on several occasions.
Ten minutes of extra time failed to produce a winner as the competitive nature of the game attracted spectators from all corners of the MDL complex.
Since a winner was needed on the night and with the sides inseparable in play, the match moved to penalties. Again, the sides couldn’t outdo each other and the round finished level with one penalty each.
Then Supremos missed their first sudden-death penalty. The subsequent Athboy effort cannoned off a post, struck the Supremos ’keeper on the back and rolled into the net to give Athboy victory and the U-9 title.
Coach Mark Farrell congratulated Athboy on their victory, and said he was immensely proud of his team. “The lads only came together six weeks ago as a team, and they’ve done so well. Either side could have won this title, but this time it’s Athboy. But we’ll be back!”
Afterwards, spectators and officials were generous in their praise of the Supremos and in the manner with which they competed in the final. The team base their game on passing and support play and only a terrific display by the Athboy ’keeper kept his side in it at times as the shots rained down.
Mark Farrell’s coaching ethos is simple soccer and movement, and he came so close to landing a title within weeks of setting sail with his U-9s. This is a team to watch and it’s clear that some of Trim Celtic’s stars of the future are already making waves at this level.
• On the night, Supremos were a team of stars and it would be impossible to pick anyone out.
