French Visit

The club once again play hosts to our counterparts U.S.E (Football) from our twin town of Etrepagny from Wednesday 27th October to Tuesday 2nd. November. The visiting group will number twenty-eight, seven adults, twenty boys and one girl. We have arranged a number of activities for them including pitch ‘n putt, quiz night, disco, visit to the National Aquatic Centre, bowling and of course football. The official test match between the two clubs will be held on Monday 1st. November at 1.30 p.m. at Tully Park, and will be contested at under 14 level. This will be the latest in a continuous exchange programme which began in 1988, as a result of which strong friendships have been forged between the two clubs. In this regard we would like to welcome especially our old friends Laurent Bausmayer (President of U.S.E.) and his wife Florence. We would like to thank all the host families for their co-operation and support, without which none of this would be possible. We would also like to acknowledge the help and generosity of The Committee of Trim Pitch & Putt Club, The Principal of Scoil na Boinne, Trim U.D.C., and Ollie Dunne of the Emmet Tavern’

Challenge Cup

Black Bull 2 - 5 Trim Celtic

Halftime: 1 - 2

Trim Celtic scorers: Paul Campbell 2 (1 pen), Shane Ashe, Ciaran Mulvenna, David Conway

Trim Celtic took the lead inside 15 minutes when they were awarded a soft penalty for handball in the box, Paul Campbell duly converting. A quickly taken free-kick saw Celtic double their lead when Noel Payne tapped the ball to Shane Ashe to fire home form 25 yards. Celtic had further chances to increase their lead with David Conway and David Fagan missing opportunities.
Black Bull were then awarded a dubious penalty, which was saved by Trim keeper Barry O’Callaghan but the referee had seen some encroaching in the penalty area and the retake was slotted home. Black Bull were then unlucky to have a player sent off by referee Gerry Hand for a harsh second bookable offence.
Trim Celtic started the second half brightly but again failed to take their chances with Shane Ashe, Ciaran Mulvenna and Noel Payne coming close. Paul Campbell then shot home a superb effort from twenty-five yards to restore Trim’s two-goal lead. Ciaran Mulvenna added another goal with a low effort from the edge of box. Another dubious penalty decision for a push in the box gave the home side hope, as it was converted this time at the first attempt.
Barry O’Callaghan then made a superb save as a breaking corner was lashed goalwards, but the keeper managed to react quickly enough to tap the ball over the bar. Celtic could have wrapped up the game on many occasions but luckily their missed chances did not come back to haunt them as David Conway wrapped up the scoring after good work from David Fagan.

Best for Trim Celtic were: David Fagan, Keith Jones and Paul Campbell

Trim Celtic: Barry O’Callaghan, Ciaran Rispin, Keith Jones, Dominic Martin, John Bligh, Ciaran Mulvenna, Paul Campbell, David Fagan, David Conway, Noel Payne, Shane Ashe

An excellent first half performance saw them build up a half time lead that the Dublin visitors never recovered from. Celtic took the lead when Under 17 debutant Craig O’Hanlon headed down Ciaran Rispin’s long cross to David Conway who poked home from close range. Within minutes Mellowes equalised with a superb free kick. However Celtic struck back when O’Hanlon deftly finished Ross Campbell’s low cross. O’ Hanlon then grabbed a second with an excellent turn in the box allowing himself the time and space to fire into the top corner. Before halftime Celtic scored a fourth when Keith Jones found David Conway in the box who slotted home from 8 yards.
In the second half Celtic lost centre half Dermot Bartley through injury but a solid performance at the back coupled with some excellent goalkeeping by Brendan Murphy kept the visitors out while at the other end Craig O’Hanlon was a constant thorn in the side of the Mellowes defence.
